i always think about that study where they had adults hold a baby, and when they were told the baby was a girl the adults said she was cute and small, and when they were told the baby was a boy they said he was big and strong. they rated the baby’s ability to do things and tendency towards certain toys differently. they even held the baby differently. (x) or when they rated the baby’s physical ability to do various tasks such as climbing up a slope differently, (x) & when they measured how much parents told their girl children vs. their boy children to be careful and stop being so rowdy (x), & when they measured how often girls and boys were told to be quiet. (x)

this was, obviously, all unconscious behavior in the adults. they’re not all like, raving sexists who outspokenly believe that women can’t do stuff or that girls really should just be quieter, be more still than boys. like its not even counting the direct, actual messages, its just literally how every single person in your entire life treats you, and if asked they would probably deny that its even because you’re a girl. how the fuck am i supposed to believe this doesn’t affect a child’s development when its literally constant throughout the entire process

This shit starts as soon as early as when someone’s still a fucking fetus. I’ve heard the saying “discrimination starts as soon as you leave the womb” but it actually starts earlier than that.

GoddAMN I am so sick of genders

👏 let 👏 people 👏 get 👏 sloppy 👏 on 👏 company 👏 time 👏

interesting how they didn’t share this instead where study show that productivity has actually increased, almost as if people tend to do their jobs more efficiently when they’re not miserable

And both can be true simultaneously…. My BiL was just telling me that he’s so far ahead on his quotas (and his whole unit is) that their manager keeps telling them to slow down a little so he spends like 3 hrs a day on video games and is still ahead.

The ways we could restructure our economy if we were willing to admit that working people to the bone is NOT the most efficient way to do things and isn’t good for people OR companies…

40 hour weeks are antiquated and abusive relics that no longer need to exist.

40 HOUR WEEKS ARE ANTIQUATED AND ABUSIVE RELICS THAT NO LONGER NEED TO EXIST

In 2008, my company had a no-work-from-home policy. Everyone had to come into the office. If you felt a little bit sick, and didn’t want to spread germs, but were still feeling good enough to work? You either burned a sick day or came into the office and spread your germs.

I moved from Chicago to the west coast that year, and I said “you can fire me or let me work remotely”, and they sort of blinked - I had to spend a few days a week working in a cubicle at our sister company.

They wanted me to spend the money and time commuting to an office where I would not talk or speak to anyone, let alone collaborate, because we were different companies focusing on different industries. There was no work I would ever do with them, and vice-versa. They resented the fact that I took up one of their desks and had to be on a segregated section of the network, and I didn’t blame them at all. Meanwhile, my employer had absolutely no way to verify that I was actually sitting at my desk at all.

So I spent fewer and fewer days going into the office and instead worked from home. My productivity skyrocketed. I started doing the best work of my life, because people weren’t walking up to me and breaking my chain of concentration. It was just me, and the cats, and cranking music on my headphones, and I was able to just plow through problem after problem, task after task. I got great reviews.

They still tried to make me quit by demoting me to my previous title and work. They then switched tracks and promoted me to management with no pay, and deliberately left me with no support so I’d fail. Because I was the exception to the remote work rule that everyone kept bringing up. My very good work and productivity wasn’t valued, but my inability to fit in with a policy they refused to revisit was breaking conformity and I had to go.

There were some touch and go situations where they were clearly lining up to fire me, but we had an incredibly bad malware outbreak that I saved them from. And round about the time they were winding up for another go, they got bought out.

My new boss immediately told me to never go into the office again, to adjust my hours as needed, and started judging me only on my output. All the asshole old guard that had been sabotaging me and trying to get me fire were bum-rushed out the door - Out of about 100 people in my department, I was one of 6 that was kept on.

I learned to productively fuck around. I really paid attention to how my brain worked, and realized that just forcing yourself to joylessly plow through a workday is death. Yeah, I did play video games on the clock. Did other non-work related things, too. Got happier and took on more complex things as a result, and got assigned to an even better team with the best boss that I’ve ever had in my entire life.

I’m not neurotypical. I suffer from CPTSD, extreme anxiety, and treatment-resistant depression. Having a non-traditional work environment has allowed me the space to still engage in required capitalism (so I can have a roof over our heads, health insurance, and food on the table) while giving me the flexibility to engage in the self-care I need to survive and thrive as much as I can with the conditions I have.

If they told me to go back into an office again, it’d be like a death sentence. I wouldn’t fit back in that space, it wouldn’t work. Millions of people are discovering the same thing to a greater or lesser degree.

This is about control. If workers gain more autonomy, they’re going to start demanding other things too. Like better wages, better benefits, and more resources. A controlled workforce won’t have the energy to dream big.

We’ve seen the dream. You can’t make us un-see it.
